NYC Mayor Mamdani Announces Commitment to Expand Access to Public Bathrooms

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a new plan to dramatically expand access to public bathrooms citywide, committing $4 million toward a Request for Proposals (RFPs) for modular, high-quality public restrooms. Drawing on successful models from cities like Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Portland, the initiative plans to include parks, plazas, and high-traffic public areas.

“Our administration is proving that the government can get right to work to make progress for working people — and perform its essential civic ‘duty,’” said Mamdani.

City leaders framed the effort as a basic quality-of-life investment, especially benefiting seniors, parents, delivery workers, and people with disabilities. The new facilities will be free, fully accessible, self-cleaning, and include water bottle fillers. While New York City already has nearly 1,000 public restrooms, roughly 70% of them are located in parks. This program is designed to significantly expand access elsewhere, accelerating the pace at which new restrooms are added and reinforcing the administration’s focus on dignity, accessibility, and practical improvements to daily city life.
