Is it time to consider time limits?
Long stretches in power naturally create advantages — fundraising networks, name recognition, and political influence that can make it tough for new candidates to break through. Term limits can level the playing field a bit and ensure that leadership changes hands from time to time, bringing fresh energy and new ideas, and reducing the likelihood of power becoming overly concentrated.
There’s also something to be said for perspective. When leaders know their time is finite, it can shift the focus from “What helps me win the next election?” to “What impact do I want to leave behind?”
In a fast-growing and constantly changing state like Texas, regular transitions can help government adapt along with it. Term limits aren’t about targeting one person — they’re about setting guardrails that keep the system healthy over the long run.
